“A castle that waits quietly, where maybe the future lies in balancing timeless heritage with sustainable renewal—turning history into a living retreat that connects culture, nature, and comfort.”

Bornemissza refurbishment

Bornemissza Castle, nestled in the heart of Hunyad County, is both a monument to history and a jewel of natural beauty. Set in Ilie, a picturesque village along the banks of the Mureș River and framed by the Carpathian and Apuseni Mountains, the castle holds a treasured place in Transylvania’s cultural heritage. Its iconic red bastion recalls its historic importance as the birthplace of Bethlen Gábor, Prince of Transylvania, in 1580.

The castle’s evolution began in 1716 and, through successive stages, reached its classical plan and eclectic style in the mid-19th century. Home to the Bornemissza family until 1949, it was later nationalized and adapted into a hospital. Today, it stands quiet, awaiting a new beginning.

Our client envisioned reviving this extraordinary site with a concept that honors its legacy while embracing sustainable design. The proposal transforms the castle into an exclusive retreat with 43 guest rooms, blending heritage with modern comfort. Visitors will enjoy a fine dining restaurant featuring produce cultivated in the castle gardens, riverside picnics against breathtaking landscapes, and a wellness sanctuary within the historic walls—an experience that unites culture, nature, and relaxation.
