“A square can change with a single gesture — sculptural, continuous, and precise — where furniture becomes landscape, and maybe the most urban thing is simply a place to sit, to gather, to pause.”

Donauwelle

The project proposes a transformation of a square that, while rich in potential, lacks the spatial qualities necessary to foster longer stays and meaningful interaction. The design identifies key deficits—such as insufficient seating, shading, greenery, and focal points—and addresses them with a series of integrated interventions. Central to the concept is the “Donauwelle”, a sculptural bench that not only defines the edge of the space but also serves as a multifunctional element: a place to sit, recline, gather, and play. Constructed from a metal substructure clad with timber slats, its organic wave form creates a strong visual identity while remaining functional and tactile. Planting troughs embedded within the form accommodate shade-giving trees and double as natural backrests, merging landscape and furniture into one cohesive gesture. Complemented by lounge furniture and a water feature, the ensemble generates diverse micro-atmospheres for relaxation, socializing, and events such as food trucks or seasonal activities. With its layered program, flexibility, and emphasis on both comfort and expression, the design turns the square into a resilient, year-round platform that reflects the forward-looking spirit of Stift Klosterneuburg.
