“Restoring a castle means more than bringing back what was — maybe it’s about revealing what it could become, where centuries of silence give way to celebration, and hospitality renews the grandeur that history left behind.”
Champagne Hotel
Wesselényi Castle rises gracefully in the scenic city of Jibou, in Northwestern Transylvania, near the legendary “Valley of the Dragons.” This historic town is steeped in tradition, and the castle itself carries centuries of layered stories. Its origins date back to 1581, when Wesselényi Ferenc received Jibou, Hodod, and 26 other settlements from Báthory István. Over the following centuries, the Wesselényi family shaped the castle into one of Transylvania’s most remarkable estates, blending classical and baroque influences. Its final form was completed in 1810 under Wesselényi Miklós.
Beyond its architectural grandeur, the estate was once celebrated for its stud farm and champagne production. After nationalization, the castle lost much of its former elegance, serving in turn as a school, a museum, and eventually falling into disuse. Yet its landscaped English garden remained a cherished destination for visitors to the region.
Today, a new vision seeks to restore Wesselényi Castle to its former glory. Our client’s concept reimagines the property as a 4-star superior Champagne Castle Hotel with 49 rooms and an array of refined amenities. Guests will be invited to enjoy the serenity of the classical courtyard, relax in a state-of-the-art wellness area, and savor distinctive culinary experiences. From champagne tastings to elegant celebrations and corporate events, the castle will once again become a place where history, culture, and hospitality converge.
